THE JHARKHAND STORY DESK
New Delhi, May 23: The Supreme Court has issued a contempt notice to Jharkhand Chief Secretary Alka Tiwari, questioning why action should not be taken against her.

Alongside Jharkhand, the court has also served contempt notices to several other states for failing to comply with its earlier directive issued on February 18.

In that directive, a bench comprising Justice Abhay S. Oka and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan had ordered states to provide retired judges with medical facilities and other entitlements. The court noted that several states, including Jharkhand, have not yet complied with this order.

Apart from Jharkhand, states such as Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Telangana, West Bengal, and the Union Territory of Delhi were also instructed to ensure these facilities for retired judges.
While issuing the contempt notices, the Supreme Court exempted all Chief Secretaries from personal appearance, instead allowing a responsible IAS officer to appear either in person or virtually. The next hearing in this matter has been scheduled for July 25.
