Jamshedpur, Feb 7:  Tata Steel has collaborated with South Eastern Railway (SER) to develop sustainable rail infrastructure by utilizing its slag-based aggregates.

In a one-of-a-kind initiative, Tata Aggreto and Tata Nirman will be used extensively in the construction of the blanketing layer in the railway track.

Tata Steel and SER will jointly work to enhance the usage of slag-based manufactured aggregates which will replace natural aggregates.

A delegation from SER led by Anil Kumar Mishra, general manager met Tata Steel senior executives yesterday and deliberated on the project execution.

The railway general manager emphasised that utilisation of sustainable alternatives is the need of the hour, and it will also help in conserving the ecology.

Transformation of steel slag into sustainable aggregates

In the endeavour to transform steel slag into sustainable aggregates, Tata Steel has set up a state-of-the-art accelerated weathering facility for processing of LD slag through steam ageing.

A dedicated laboratory has been set up to ensure quality assurance of the product.

Tata Steel had launched India’s first branded LD slag products – Tata Aggreto and Tata Nirman.

These initiatives of Tata Steel were well appreciated by the visiting team. The use of slag-based manufactured aggregates helps in the preservation of biodiversity by reducing the need for mining of natural aggregates and eliminates the requirement of transportation of aggregates across large distances.
