Jamshedpur, Jan 8: Tata Steel today achieved a significant milestone when the company’s first large-scale H-Blast Furnace at Jamshedpur crossed the 50 million tonnes hot metal production mark.

This milestone makes the H-Blast Furnace the first furnace in India to achieve this milestone without any intermediate repairs, setting a new benchmark for the steel industry.

Outstanding operational efficiency and performance

The ‘H’ blast furnace was commissioned in 2008, with a working volume of 3230m³. Since its commissioning, the furnace has maintained a production output of approximately 20 % above its rated capacity and has produced over 3 million tonnes per annum.

This achievement is a testimony to the plant’s process control, operational efficiency and readiness of cross-functional teams who have constantly faced challenges and focused on excellence with innovative solutions.

Recognition for engineering and sustainability

“Achieving 50 million tonnes of hot metal production without any intermediate repairs is a historic milestone for Tata Steel, and is a living testimony to the exceptional engineering and operational capabilities of our teams,” said Chaitanya Bhanu, Vice President- Operations, Tata Steel Jamshedpur.

According to him, the H blast furnace has set new benchmarks in productivity and efficiency and also demonstrates a deep commitment to a sustainable and innovative steelmaking approach.

“This success not only solidifies our path to global leadership in the steel industry, but also inspires us to reach new heights of excellence,” he added.

National and international recognition

Over the years, the H blast furnace has received significant recognition at the national and international levels for its outstanding performance.

It has maintained the record for the highest coal injection in India for nine consecutive years and has received an award from the President of India for its energy-saving innovations.

In addition, it has set new standards for the industry in hot metal quality, especially by maintaining strict control over silicon content.

The World Steel Association has also recognized the furnace’s exceptional practices in process safety for two years running, a clear testimony to its continued success.
