SWAMI DIVYA GYAN

Ranchi, Oct 8: The Torpa Assembly, located in Jharkhand’s Khunti district, holds significant political importance, where caste and religious equations, internal discord, and the influence of opposition forces play a crucial role in determining electoral outcomes. Historically, this constituency has seen a fierce contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), and the 2024 election is expected to be no different. However, this time, the path does not seem as smooth for the BJP as it was in 2019.

Social and political equations: The changing game

The regional social equations of the Torpa Assembly have always played a significant role in the electoral calculus. In this area, the Christian and Sarna (tribal) communities have almost equal numbers, making them a decisive force during voting. The Rautia community in Bano block traditionally supports the BJP, while the Christian community has been strongly opposed to the party. The political environment here often remains divided along religious and social lines, compelling both major parties to craft their strategies with depth.

In the 2019 Assembly elections, BJP’s Koche Munda managed to win primarily due to the triangular contest. At that time, the division of votes between JMM’s Sudeep Gudiya and independent candidate Paulus Surin worked in the BJP’s favor. But this time, circumstances are different. With Paulus Surin being imprisoned, the contest could be a direct one, adding to BJP’s challenges.

BJP’s internal strife: Dissatisfaction within the party

According to sources, this time, the BJP’s battle is not just limited to the opposition; the party is also grappling with internal dissatisfaction and confusion. Koche Munda, who became an MLA after winning last time, seems to be losing popularity among the public and party workers alike. Discontent is brewing among workers against him, and local BJP members believe that if he is given a ticket again, the party’s defeat is almost certain.

There are also concerns about Koche Munda’s personal image. His lack of contact with the public and some controversial decisions have damaged his reputation. According to BJP workers, not only would awarding Koche Munda a ticket be a risky move, but it could also demoralize the party’s grassroots workers.

Nikhil Kandulna: A ray of hope for BJP

As an alternative to Koche Munda, the most talked-about name within the BJP is Nikhil Kandulna. Nikhil Kandulna, a resident of Kulhai village in the Rania block, is an emerging leader in local politics. He is associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and has been actively involved in social programs and public outreach campaigns in the area. He is seen as a hardworking and grassroots leader who, like Sudeep Gudiya, participates in the joys and sorrows of the people.

Nikhil Kandulna is being considered a strong candidate both within and outside the party. However, his path is not that easy, as senior BJP leader Neelkanth Singh Munda continues to support Koche Munda, deepening the internal conflict within the party and potentially raising questionsk about Kandulna’s candidacy.

The strong grip of opposition forces: Sudeep Gudiya’s emerging role

On the other hand, JMM’s Sudeep Gudiya has maintained his presence in the area. Despite losing the 2019 election, he has sustained strong relations with the local public. He has participated in every minor and major event and has been there for the people during every crisis. This public outreach and grassroots connection work in his favor, and if the BJP fails to choose the right candidate, Sudeep Gudiya’s chances of winning increase significantly.

Along with Sudeep Gudiya’s public outreach campaign, JMM’s strong support base poses a formidable challenge to the BJP. Especially with Paulus Surin not running this time, the likelihood of JMM receiving unified backing has increased.

Politics and narrative: The game of internal politics

In the Torpa Assembly elections, the candidates’ image and public relations are not the only crucial factors; the narrative in politics also plays a significant role. There are rumors in local political circles that Koche Munda opposed Arjun Munda internally in the last Lok Sabha elections and supported Kalicharan Munda instead. Although there is no concrete evidence for this, politics often runs on narratives. This discussion could weaken Koche Munda’s standing within the BJP.

The road ahead: Tough challenges for BJP

The upcoming election in the Torpa Assembly presents several challenges for the BJP. The party not only has to fight against strong opposition forces but also manage its internal differences and dissatisfaction. Choosing the right candidate will be crucial for the party, and if the BJP makes a wrong move this time, it may have to pay a heavy price. Another potential candidate could be Mannu Munda.

However, giving a chance to a new and grassroots leader like Nikhil Kandulna could mark a fresh start for the BJP, but the party will need to quell its internal strife for this to happen. On the other hand, fielding Nikhil Kandulna as a strong alternative to JMM’s Sudeep Gudiyan could bring new energy to the BJP in the region.

Ultimately, the Torpa election will be a decisive battle for both the BJP and JMM, and it will be interesting to see which party succeeds in winning the trust of the people this time.
