Daltonganj, November 3: Two highly venomous spectacled cobras were found in an irrigation well at Choukri village under the jurisdiction of Haidernagar police station in Palamu on Tuesday, sources said.
Haidernagar police station officer-in-charge T. Mannan said residents had been advised not to look into the well, where the snakes were spotted.
“Locals have been asked not to peer into the well, which currently has two deadly snakes in its water,” Mannan said. He added that parents had been strictly warned to keep children away from the well and that women carrying infants should also stay clear of it.
Medininagar Forest Division DFO Satyam Kumar said local forest personnel had been instructed to coordinate with police to safely rescue the snakes.
Sources said the well is a wide masonry structure, and recent rains had raised the water level to around 10 feet.
Kumar said snakes may accidentally fall into wells while chasing or hunting frogs and lizards. Forest sources said snakes are capable swimmers and may survive for a relatively long time in water.
Sources recalled a similar incident in Chainpur around five years ago, when a snake was brought out of a well with the help of a rope and bucket. The two cobras in Choukri had not been rescued by the time this report was filed.
