Vandalism at Nilamber Pitamber University in Daltonganj — suspected miscreants damage campus property.

Daltonganj, Oct 28: Miscreants, suspected to be drug addicts, have gone on a vandalism spree at Nilamber Pitamber University (NPU) in Daltonganj, causing extensive damage to university property during the Diwali and Chhath Puja holidays.

University Property Targeted

According to university sources, a section of the glass-reinforced concrete (GRC) net has been damaged in two places, while around 50 metres of copper wire were cut and stolen, rendering the water motor pump non-functional.

The blades of two ceiling fans were also found twisted out of shape, and several mobile phone charging points were broken. Barbed wire fencing around the campus has been damaged at three to four locations.

Drug Addicts Suspected

Sources said that groups of drug addicts often assemble on the university premises at night, where they are believed to consume alcohol or drugs and vandalise university assets.

“There is an acute shortage of night watchmen. The university requires at least six for effective security,” said a staff member requesting anonymity.

Vice Chancellor Seeks Police Chowki

Vice Chancellor Prof. Dinesh Kumar Singh expressed concern over the repeated incidents of vandalism and theft.

“What we urgently need is a police chowki on the campus. We had one earlier when the university operated from the Zila Parishad guest house. After we shifted, the chowki was withdrawn, but we need it now more than ever due to the remote location and vulnerability of our buildings and assets,” Prof. Singh said.

He added that police patrols at night are essential, as the campus becomes completely deserted after evening, leaving it open to anti-social elements.

Complaint to Be Filed

Proctor Dr R.K. Jha has been directed to lodge a formal complaint with the town police station regarding the damage and thefts.

University authorities have urged the local administration to increase night patrols and strengthen security around the NPU campus to prevent further incidents.
