Ranchi, March 2: For the first time on Saturday, Sadar Hospital Ranchi successfully conducted hernia surgery on a patient through the Totally Extra Peritoneal (TEP) method.
Until such advance, hernia surgery was reportedly conducted only at selected corporate health centres in the state. Today, surgeons and doctors achieved this feat at Sadar Hospital Ranchi free of cost.
A senior doctor of Ranchi said that TEP is considered the most advanced laparoscopic surgery and costly, which requires high skill to perform.
The doctors’ team of Ranchi Sadar Hospital comprising laparoscopic surgeon Dr Ajit Kumar, aesthetic Dr Dipak, Dr Vikash Ballabh Sarita, Shashi, Lakhan, Sushil, Poonam and Mukesh (all OT staff) conducted this surgery.

The patient, Jay Kishun Yadav ( 46), a resident of the Kokar area of Ranchi, had been suffering from pain in their right side hernia for a long time. He visited corporate hospitals in Ranchi for operations but could not afford the treatment cost.
Finally, he reached Sadar Hospital Ranchi. Though he had no Ayushman Card, his surgery was conducted free of cost through the advanced TEP method.
A significant benefit of TEP surgery is that it is a painless operation with less bleeding. The patient recovers fast after the operation and can return to everyday life in two or three days. Moreover, there is no chance of hernia reoccurrence, which generally happens in traditional operation, and no spot appears on the body after the operation,” said Dr Ajit Kumar, laparoscopic surgeon of Sadar Hospital.
The doctor said Ranchi Sadar Hospital had also conducted different types of hernia operations from laparoscopic. The civil surgeon and deputy superintendent of Sadar Hospital made a tremendous contribution in performing TEP surgery for a patient for the first time.
