New Delhi, March 11: The Supreme Court declined to consider West Bengal’s petition on Monday contesting the Calcutta High Court’s decision to order a CBI investigation into the Sandeshkhali incident involving the assault on officials from the Enforcement Directorate.

Nevertheless, the Supreme Court removed the critical remarks made by the high court against the state police. During the proceedings, the Supreme Court questioned the state government about the delay in the arrest of the main accused in the case, Shajahan Sheikh.

In recent events, the Calcutta High Court mandated the transfer of the investigation into the attack on Enforcement Directorate officials in Sandeshkhali to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Furthermore, the court directed the West Bengal police to hand over Shajahan Sheikh to the CBI. The high court remarked that the state police exhibited evasive behaviour regarding the case.

In the meantime, the Basirhat sub-divisional court placed Shahjahan Sheikh under four days of CBI custody.

Shahjahan accused of attack on ED officers, land grab and sexual assault

In addition to being charged for land encroachment, extortion, and maltreatment of women with his accomplices, Shahjahan is also accused of being involved in the attack on an ED team during a raid on his Sandeshkhali residence on January 5.

This month, Sandeshkhali in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal has experienced extensive demonstrations against TMC figure Shahjahan Sheikh, with some women demanding justice for purported abuses attributed to the TMC leader.

Shajahan Sheikh and his close associates were accused by a significant number of women in Sandeshkhali of land-grab and sexual assault.
