RANCHI: Former chief minister Hemant Soren today visited his ancestral village Nemra in Ramgarh district to attend the last rites of his uncle, Raja Ram Soren, who died away on April 30.

The Jharkhand High Court allowed him to attend the last rites in police custody and restricted his interaction with the media.

Soren is lodged in Birsa Munda jail after the ED arrested him on January 31, accusing him of generating “huge amounts of proceeds of crime” by manipulating official records, using dummy sellers and purchasers, and forging documents to acquire large parcels of land worth crores of rupees.

 Soren moves to Supreme Court

Meanwhile, Soren moved the Supreme Court on Monday, challenging the Jharkhand High Court’s judgement justifying his arrest by the ED in a money laundering case related to an alleged land scam.
Senior lawyer Kapil Sibal, representing Soren, requested the court to list the case urgently, emphasizing the need for Soren to campaign for his party, JMM, as the Lok Sabha elections in Jharkhand begin on May 13.
