Imphal, June 10: In the Kangpokpi district on Monday, suspected militants ambushed Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s advance security convoy. The attack happened as the convoy was travelling to the Jiribam region, which has seen violence recently.

According to police reports, security forces’ vehicles were targeted with multiple gunshots, leading to a shootout as security personnel retaliated. The exchange of gunfire persisted near Kotlen village along National Highway 53, resulting in at least one security personnel sustaining bullet injuries during the ambush.

In light of recent violent episodes, Chief Minister Biren Singh had intended to visit Jiribam on his way back to Imphal from Delhi in order to evaluate the situation.

On Saturday, suspected militants set fire to at least 70 homes in Jiribam, two police outposts, and a forest beat office.

Against a backdrop of rising violence in the area, the ambush occurred. Following the discovery of the body of Soibam Saratkumar Singh, a 59-year-old Meitei farmer who had been missing for weeks, tensions rose on June 6. As a result, there was an increase in violence and demands for heightened security measures.
