Daltonganj, July 24: Elephant drinking water from an artificial water trough in the Palamu Tiger Reserve (PTR) has come as a surprise. This episode happened a couple of days back only.

It was at Parsa Pani water trough under the Ramandaag compartment 1 of the Garu east range of the PTR where an adult elephant was found drinking water from an artificial trough.

“It’s a very unseen scene when a huge elephant was found taking water by its trunk from an artificial trough,” said the range officer, Garu East, Umesh Dubey.

Elephants have no sweat glands

Dubey said, “As elephants have no sweat glands, they are pretty fond of water. They prefer water bodies like ponds or water harvesting structures.”

Elephant needs a huge quantum of water but at the Parsa Pani water trough the elephant just used its trunk to have water.

He reminded the artificial water trough caters to the needs of general deer, langurs, bison, water birds and monkeys.

Indian rock python found relaxing in a water trough

Only some 8 or 9 weeks ago there was found an Indian rock python relaxing in a water trough right in the Betla National Park in the PTR.

PTR sources said wildlife knows where to get goods or where to drink water.

Elephants are pretty wise in this matter. They know their food like bamboo or banana shafts. There is no compromise with water for them.
