Jamshedpur, September 6: A heated political exchange has erupted in Jharkhand, with senior BJP leader Satbir Singh Somu calling on Chief Minister Hemant Soren to apologize to the nation’s scientists and the BJP for a recent statement regarding the COVID-19 vaccine.

The controversy stems from comments made by Soren following the deaths of several candidates during recruitment examinations for the state’s Excise Department.

What remarks Hemant Soren made?

Chief Minister Soren, addressing the issue of fatalities, claimed that many elderly, young people and girls had succumbed to “cough and cold” during the pandemic, a reference he tied to the vaccine’s alleged dangers.

According to Soren, while some countries had ceased the use of certain vaccines, India continued to administer them without restraint. He also accused the opposition of exploiting the vaccination drive for political gain, alleging that funds were collected under false pretences during the pandemic. In support of his claim, the Chief Minister cited the death of a former MP’s daughter from what he described as a simple illness.

Remarks an insult to nation’s scientific community: Somu

Somu, in response, took to social media to demand an apology, arguing that the Chief Minister’s remarks were an insult to the nation’s scientific community, who were instrumental in the development of the vaccine, and a baseless defamation of the BJP.

“This statement defames the BJP and disrespects the tireless efforts of Indian scientists. Chief Minister Soren must issue a public apology, or BJP workers will stage protests, including burning his effigy,” Somu warned.

The Chief Minister’s remarks have ignited a fresh wave of criticism, with opposition leaders accusing Soren of spreading misinformation and undermining public trust in vaccines that have played a crucial role in combating the COVID-19 pandemic.
