Daltonganj, Nov 30: Lesliganj police in Palamu in an early morning swoop down today nabbed a 29-year-old youth identified as Md Nawaz Ansari of Karma village and seized 90 kgs cough syrup, the banned composition of which namely codeine phosphate and triprolidine, qualifies for legal action under the NDPS Act.

SDPO Lesliganj Manoj Kumar Jha said the youth Ansari was not only found in possession of such a huge quantity of cough syrup, which had a banned composition, but he was also selling it. His offence comes under the ambit of the NDPS Act.

Biggest seizure of banned cough syrup in Palamu in 5 years

The officer in-charge of the Lesliganj police station Raju Kumar Gupta said each bottle of this cough syrup was 180 rupees per 100 ML.

The bottle had a wrapper that read manufactured by, batch number, date of manufacturing, and date of expiry.

Police officer Gupta said the expiry date of these seized cough syrup was shown as March 2026.

However, the cough syrup bottle wrapper didn’t show any licence number. It showed an address of Himachal Pradesh.

Sources said it is the biggest-ever seizure of the banned cough syrup in Palamu in the past 5 years.

Police officer Raju Kumar Gupta and his team under the monitoring of SDPO Manoj Kumar Jha did a stunning job.

Drug inspector seizes cough syrup for testing

As it’s cold cough time in the fluctuating winter season, this banned cough syrup could have affected many buyers, some of them may not know that it’s less a cough syrup but more a sedative, a drug and not a medicine.

Gupta said the drug inspector Kailash Munda was called in and noted the seized banned cough syrup’s details.

The drug inspector took with him nearly 80 samples of the banned cough syrup for test etc.

This haul of banned cough syrup by the Lesliganj police overtakes seizures of drugs in grams and marijuana in kilograms.

Gupta further said the permissible limit is 1 kg of such cough syrup but here it was 90 kgs. Such a big possession is outright illegal and unlawful, he added.
