Dhanbad, Jan 8: The Dr. Yogender Singh Memorial SNMMCH Inter-MBBS Students’ Cricket Tournament kicked off with an exciting inaugural match today.

The Interns team from the 2019 batch dominated the 2020 batch, winning by a commanding 119 runs. Batting first, the 2019 batch scored 238 runs, losing 7 wickets in 16 overs. In response, the 2020 batch managed only 119 runs in 16 overs, losing nine wickets.

Md Rashid of the 2019 batch was named the Man of the Match for his outstanding century, scoring 110 runs in just 38 balls. Abhishek Kumar, also from the 2019 batch, claimed the title of Best Bowler after taking 6 wickets, showcasing remarkable skill.

Tournament inauguration and background

The tournament, part of the college’s annual fest Antrangni, was officially inaugurated by Dr. KK Lal, the principal of Dr. Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital (SNMMCH), and Prof. (Dr.) DP Bhushan, Head of the Department of Orthopaedics.

The tournament is named in honor of Dr. Yogender Singh, one of the founding professors of the institution.

The event has been revived after a two-year hiatus, following a clash between players of two MBBS batches that led to its ban by former principal Dr. Jyotiranjan Prasad.

The new principal Dr. KK Lal, following a proposal from senior professors and students, decided to reinstate the tournament.

Address from principal

Dr. KK Lal, in his address, encouraged students to use this event as an opportunity to showcase their sporting talent while maintaining discipline. He also participated in the batting session, motivating the MBBS students. “It is an opportunity for you to display your sports talent and play while maintaining discipline,” he said.

Senior professor Dr. DP Bhushan emphasized the importance of good conduct on the field, saying, “Victory and defeat do not matter, but display and behavior on the field count much.”

The tournament holds special significance this year as it marks the retirement of both Dr. Lal and Prof. Bhushan, and it is being celebrated as a farewell event from the students.

The inaugural ceremony was attended by faculty members, interns, MBBS students, and staff. Sports in-charge, Prof. Dr. CS Suman, expressed gratitude for the presence and support of the entire SNMMCH community.
