Aizawl, Jan 16: Former Army chief V K Singh took oath as the Governor of Mizoram on Thursday, becoming the 25th person to hold the position since the state gained full statehood in 1987.

The oath of office and secrecy was administered by Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Vijay Bishnoi during a ceremony at Raj Bhavan in Aizawl.

The event saw the presence of key figures, including Chief Minister Lalduhoma, his cabinet members, Assembly Speaker Lalbiakzama, Deputy Speaker Lalfamkima, MPs, MLAs, senior officials, and top police officers. Former Chief Ministers Lal Thanhawla and Zoramthanga, along with church leaders and representatives of various organizations, also attended the ceremony.

Singh succeeded Hari Babu Kambhampati, who has been appointed as the Governor of Odisha. His appointment as Mizoram’s Governor was officially made by President Droupadi Murmu on December 24.

A retired general who entered politics, Singh joined the BJP in 2014 and won the Ghaziabad Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh during the general election that year, securing re-election in 2019.

In Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first term, he held roles such as Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs, MoS (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, and MoS for Statistics and Programme Implementation. During Modi’s second term, Singh served as MoS for Road Transport and Highways and Civil Aviation.
