Dhanbad, Feb 11: A three-day workshop on Seismic Modelling and Migration using SeisRTM successfully concluded at IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad.

The workshop was jointly organized by the Seismic Data Processing (SDP) division of C-DAC Pune, the Department of Applied Geophysics of IIT ISM, and the Department of Earth Sciences of IIT Roorkee.

Importance of Seismic Modelling and Indigenous Software

Prof. M.K. Singh, Dean (Academics) of IIT ISM, attended as the chief guest and distributed certificates to participants. Addressing the workshop, Prof. Singh underscored the importance of such initiatives in providing students with practical exposure.

He highlighted the impact of powerful indigenous software, developed under the National Supercomputing Mission, in advancing technical expertise and research in seismic imaging.

The valedictory function was also attended by Prof. Sajit Kumar Pal, Head of the Department of Applied Geophysics at IIT ISM, and Richa Rastogi, Scientist F at C-DAC Pune.

Prof. Pal expressed gratitude to IIT ISM Director Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Deputy Director Prof. Dheeraj Kumar, and Dean (Academics) Prof. Mritunjay Kumar for their continuous support. He also commended the organizing team for ensuring the workshop’s seamless execution.

Advancing Seismic Imaging with SeisRTM

The workshop aimed to expand the outreach of SeisRTM software, facilitating its further development and contributing to advancements in seismic imaging research.

Prof. S. Datta Gupta from IIT ISM’s Department of Applied Geophysics explained that SeisRTM is a highly customizable Reverse Time Migration (RTM) software designed for efficient seismic imaging. It has been developed by C-DAC Pune in collaboration with IIT Roorkee and ONGC under India’s National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) led by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

Over the three days, participants engaged in hands-on training and gained theoretical insights into seismic imaging techniques. The sessions covered fundamental and advanced topics, equipping attendees with practical experience in using SeisRTM for seismic data analysis.

Key Sessions and Expert Talks

The first day introduced participants to basic concepts, including LINUX and PBS commands, 2D model and geometry creation, and seismic data generation using 2D isotropic modeling. A notable session featured an expert talk on seismic modeling by Richa Rastogi, Scientist F at C-DAC Pune.

Hands-on training was conducted by C-DAC Pune engineers— Neetu Mangalath (Senior Project Engineer), Sneha Bidve (Project Engineer), and Bharath Krishnan (Project Engineer), who guided participants through the functionalities of SeisRTM software.

On the second day, Prof. Anand Joshi, Head of the Department of Earth Sciences at IIT Roorkee, delivered an insightful lecture on the theoretical aspects of RTM. Participants then engaged in hands-on training on seismic migration of previously generated seismic data, followed by post-RTM utilities.

The final day provided participants with SEGY data for executing RTM applications, leading to application-focused discussions and reinforcing the key learnings from the workshop.

The event concluded with an interactive session, allowing attendees to deepen their understanding of seismic modelling and migration techniques.
