New Delhi, March 7: The Supreme Court today granted interim bail to Uttar Pradesh MLA Abbas Ansari, who is the son of late gangster Mukhtar Ansari, in a case under the state’s Gangsters Act.

While allowing his release, the court imposed strict conditions, including a directive to remain within his official residence in Lucknow and obtain prior permission before visiting his Mau constituency.

Additionally, he is prohibited from leaving Uttar Pradesh without the court’s approval and must inform local police a day in advance before attending court hearings.

A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh sought a status report from the police within six weeks to ensure compliance with these conditions.

The court observed that while Ansari had been granted bail in all other criminal cases, he remained in custody solely due to the Gangsters Act case.

Ansari, a legislator from Mau representing the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party, was taken into custody in a separate case on November 4, 2022. However, his arrest under the Gangsters Act occurred on September 6, 2024. His bail plea in this case had been previously rejected by the Allahabad High Court on December 18, 2023.

The case originated from an FIR lodged on August 31, 2024, at Kotwali Karvi Police Station in Chitrakoot district. Ansari, along with Navneet Sachan, Niyaz Ansari, Faraz Khan, and Shahbaz Alam Khan, was accused of extortion and assault under the UP Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, 1986.
