Ranchi, March 21: Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren emphasized the need for lifestyle changes, healthy diets, and increased physical activities to prevent non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and asthma.
He made these remarks while addressing a round-table discussion organized by UNICEF on Preventing Childhood Non-Communicable Diseases Through Healthy Diets at the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly, chaired by Speaker Dr. Rabindra Nath Mahto.
Focus on Healthy Diet and Physical Activities
During his address, Chief Minister Soren stressed the importance of incorporating healthy diets and physical activities into daily life to prevent the rising threat of diseases like cancer and heart disease.
He warned that neglecting one’s health could lead to costly medical treatments with no guarantee of full recovery. He urged the public to make conscious efforts to avoid such diseases by focusing on preventive measures.
Call for Statewide Health Report Card
Soren further pointed out the rapid spread of various diseases across the state and emphasized the need for a comprehensive health report card. This initiative would help identify affected populations and ensure timely treatment.
The government, he added, is working continuously to modernize and improve health facilities to ensure that people receive accurate diagnoses and effective treatment.

Addressing Regional Health Concerns
The Chief Minister also highlighted the prevalence of region-specific diseases in Jharkhand. For example, sickle cell anemia and other related conditions are common in districts like Simdega, while kala-azar is widespread in Sahibganj and parts of Santhal.
The government is taking steps to identify these diseases in affected areas and provide appropriate healthcare to safeguard the health of the population, especially in rural and tribal regions, the CM said.
Promoting Millet Consumption, Avoiding Junk Food
Emphasizing the role of diet in maintaining health, Soren urged people to consume local indigenous foods, particularly millets, and avoid junk foods that contribute to the rise of various health issues. He urged parents to provide children with healthy diets instead of processed foods, to help prevent chronic diseases in the future.
Early Diagnosis and Treatment for Birth Defects
The Chief Minister also stressed the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of birth defects. He explained that if not treated promptly, these conditions could worsen the health of newborns. In this regard, the government has taken several steps to ensure proper care and treatment for newborns in the state.

Appreciation for UNICEF’s Support in Rural Health
Soren expressed his appreciation for UNICEF’s contribution to providing healthcare in Jharkhand’s remote areas.
He noted that the government, in collaboration with organizations like UNICEF, is committed to delivering better healthcare services to every citizen, including those in forests, hills, and remote regions.
He also highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to eliminate various diseases, with positive results already being seen.
The Chief Minister concluded by reiterating the importance of a collaborative effort to improve public health, with voluntary organizations playing a crucial role in ensuring that every person, especially those in rural and isolated areas, has access to quality healthcare.
On this occasion, Minister Yogendra Mahto, Minister Sudivya Kumar, MLA Kalpana Soren, along with several other legislators, UNICEF’s Astha Alang, Dr. Kaninika Mitra, and other representatives were present.
