Ranchi, March 29: The Adani Group’s long-awaited plan to set up a cement factory in Godda has gained fresh momentum following a meeting between Gautam Adani and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren. The high-profile discussion has reignited hopes for large-scale industrialization in the region, with the project promising job creation, infrastructure development, and environmental sustainability.
While the Chief Minister’s Office termed the meeting as a formal engagement, sources suggest that investment opportunities—especially in the cement sector—were a key part of the discussion. This aligns with Adani’s broader strategy of diversifying beyond energy and infrastructure.
New Push for Cement Plant in Godda
Sources said that Adani has sought the Jharkhand government’s support in securing approvals, particularly the denotification of around 25 hectares of land required for the cement plant. The proposed site is part of a 225-acre land parcel acquired under the Raghubar Das administration within a Special Economic Zone (SEZ). Since SEZ land is designated for specific purposes, Adani Power has applied to the SEZ Commissioner for denotification after obtaining the state government’s initial approval.

Turning Pollution into Progress: Cement Plant to Tackle Fly Ash Waste
The cement factory is expected to be a win-win for both industry and the environment. The 1,600 MW Adani Power Plant in Godda currently generates large quantities of fly ash, a byproduct of coal combustion that can be highly polluting if not managed properly. However, the cement plant will utilize this fly ash as a key raw material in cement production, significantly reducing environmental pollution.
This eco-friendly approach will not only minimize waste but also help create a cleaner, more sustainable industrial ecosystem in the region. By repurposing fly ash instead of letting it accumulate, the project is expected to lower air and soil pollution, ensuring greener industrial growth in Jharkhand.
Major Industrial and Economic Impact
The proposed 4 MTPA (Million Tonnes Per Annum) cement plant, with an estimated investment of ₹1,200 crore, is expected to:
✅ Create 3,000–5,000 direct and indirect jobs in the region.
✅ Boost infrastructure and industrialization in Jharkhand.
✅ Support a circular economy by recycling fly ash into cement.
✅ Enhance India’s energy cooperation with Bangladesh, as Adani Power continues to supply electricity across the border.
The project underscores Adani’s growing influence in Jharkhand’s industrial landscape, expanding its footprint beyond power generation.
Political Ramifications: Congress Uneasy Over Adani’s Expansion
Despite its economic and environmental advantages, the project has triggered political tension, particularly within the Congress party, a coalition partner in the Hemant Soren-led government.
Some Congress leaders view Soren’s engagement with Adani with suspicion, as it appears to contradict the party’s national stance against corporate expansion by conglomerates like Adani. The meeting between Soren and Adani has fuelled speculation about a growing alliance, raising concerns that such ties could weaken Congress’s influence in the state government.
As the cement factory project moves forward, all eyes will be on the political dynamics between Soren, Adani, and Congress, as well as the impact on Jharkhand’s industrial future.
