Jamshedpur, April 8: Tata Steel has once again earned the prestigious title of Steel Sustainability Champion 2025 by the World Steel Association (Worldsteel), marking the eighth consecutive year the company has received this honour.

Since the inception of Worldsteel’s Sustainability Champions programme in 2018, Tata Steel has been consistently recognised for its leadership and excellence in sustainable development within the global steel industry.

The 2025 Champions were announced at Worldsteel’s Special General Meeting (SGM) of the Board of Members held in Sydney, Australia, where Tata Steel stood among an elite group of global steelmakers acknowledged for their sustainability performance.

Driving Green Innovation

T.V. Narendran, CEO & Managing Director, Tata Steel, said, “We are honoured to be recognised once again as a Steel Sustainability Champion by Worldsteel. This achievement reflects our continued commitment to sustainable steelmaking, integrating cutting-edge technologies and responsible business practices to reduce environmental impact. We remain dedicated to driving innovation, improving resource efficiency, and contributing meaningfully to a greener and more resilient future for the steel industry.”

To qualify for the title, companies must meet rigorous criteria including the signing of the Worldsteel Sustainability Charter and demonstrating strong environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance.

Evaluation metrics include material efficiency, environmental management systems, safety performance, employee training, investment in innovation, and economic value creation.

Companies are also required to provide Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) data to support transparency and environmental responsibility.

Pioneering Carbon Reduction in India

Tata Steel continues to lead with pioneering sustainability initiatives. In FY25, it became the first Indian company to launch Carbon Bank, a virtual CO2 repository aimed at tracking and managing emissions.

The company also plans to roll out new low-carbon steel products using the Chain of Custody methodology recommended by Worldsteel.

* First Indian steelmaker to use biochar in production processes

* First full-laden raw material shipment using B24 biofuel (2024)

Tata Steel is also an accredited member of Worldsteel’s Climate Action programme and earned an A- rating from CDP for its climate disclosures in 2023.

The company has developed strong capabilities in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), further strengthening its efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of its products from cradle to grave.
