SUBHASH MISHRA

Ranchi, May 3: The central emergency department at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi is facing a severe crisis due to non-functional infrastructure and a shortage of basic medicines, severely affecting patient care.

The Junior Doctors Association (JDA) of RIMS raised alarm on Friday evening by sending an SOS to the medical superintendent, urging immediate action to address the deteriorating conditions in the emergency department.

According to the memorandum submitted to the superintendent, the central emergency department has been operating in a crippled condition for a long period, with essential apparatus out of order and the supply of basic medicines consistently failing. This situation has led to significant delays and complications in providing necessary medical care to patients.

Defunct Equipment and Shortage of Basic Supplies

The JDA memorandum, signed by President Dr. Ankit Kumar and other key members, highlights several alarming issues, including the non-functioning of over half of the monitors in the emergency department.

In addition, the central emergency is reportedly lacking vital medicines such as Paracetamol, IV fluids, and essential equipment like IV cannulas, IV sets, and blood transfusion supplies.

The memorandum stated, “It is deeply embarrassing to say that RIMS, considered the tertiary center of Jharkhand, is lacking basic amenities that should be available even in primary health centers. Patients come here hoping for proper treatment, but they are unable to receive it due to the absence of essential facilities.”

Demands for Immediate Action and Improved Facilities

In response to these issues, the JDA has put forth five key demands to the medical superintendent to ensure the smooth operation of the central emergency department.

JDA’s Key Demands:

  • Ensure availability of essential medicines across all departments.
  • Ban the purchase of medical supplies from private vendors.
  • Appoint a dedicated store in-charge with clear accountability.
  • Establish a separate cabin for doctors within the emergency department.
  • Ensure adequate deployment of Multi-Purpose Workers (MPWs) as required in the emergency department.

The JDA concluded the memorandum by expressing hope that the medical superintendent would take swift action to rectify the situation and improve the functioning of the emergency department, ensuring better care for patients and a safer working environment for medical staff.

The JDA memorandum was signed by President Dr. Ankit Kumar, Executive President Dr. Abhishek Laguri, Vice Presidents Dr. Abhishek Hansdak, Dr. Amit Kumar, Dr. Aradhna Kumari, Dr. Kumari Kirti, and Secretary Dr. OM Prakash.
