PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, May 9: Sona Devi University celebrated the 164th birth anniversary of the world-renowned poet and philosopher Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore at its campus in Ghatshila today.

The event, themed around “Rabindranath Tagore’s Philosophy, Emotions, and Literary Contributions,” was jointly organized by the departments of Bengali, History, and Political Science.

Prof. Mitreshwar, former Head of the History Department at Ghatsila College, attended as the chief guest.

In his address, he described Tagore as “the embodiment of original consciousness.” He highlighted Tagore’s efforts to connect with the masses through works like “Bhanusingher Padavali” in Maithili and emphasized that without Tagore’s creations, Bengali culture would be incomplete.

Prof. Mitreshwar also noted that Tagore didn’t just observe social issues but offered solutions, and that his writings reflect a pursuit of joy achievable only through knowledge. He also critiqued profit-driven education, advocating instead for the nation envisioned by Tagore.

University Chancellor Prabhakar Singh remarked that it was a matter of pride to celebrate Tagore’s birth anniversary alongside that of great warrior Maharana Pratap, whose day is observed as Shaurya Diwas (Day of Valour).

Singh stressed the importance of national security and unity amidst ongoing India-Pakistan tensions.

Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr. J.P. Mishra spoke about Tagore’s ideals of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (the world is one family), and his deep connection with nature and Mahatma Gandhi.

Registrar Dr. Gulab Singh Azad encouraged students and faculty to follow Tagore’s educational principles, which promote humility and faith.
