PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, May 13: The India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Ranchi centre has issued a weather advisory for Jharkhand, highlighting the likelihood of extreme weather conditions, including heatwaves, thunderstorms, and gusty winds over various parts of the state from May 13 to May 16.

Heatwave to persist in North-Eastern and South-Eastern Jharkhand

On May 13, the IMD predicts heatwave conditions at isolated locations in the north-eastern and south-eastern parts of Jharkhand.

These conditions are expected to persist into May 14 and 15, though slightly more localized, primarily affecting the north-eastern parts of the state.

Residents are advised to take necessary precautions against heat-related illnesses.

The elderly, children, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions are particularly vulnerable. Citizens are encouraged to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight during peak hours, and limit strenuous outdoor activities.

Thunderstorm and Gusty Winds Expected Across Multiple Regions

Alongside the heatwave, the state is also likely to witness thunderstorm activity. On May 15, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds with speeds ranging between 30 to 40 Km/h are likely to occur at isolated places over the eastern and adjoining central parts of the state.

The intensity of the thunderstorms is expected to increase on May 16, with wind speeds rising to 40–50 km/h. The weather system is forecasted to impact almost the entire state, excluding the north-western parts.

Weather System Responsible for the Change

According to the IMD, a trough currently extends from the central parts of Bihar to southern Jharkhand and reaches up to 1.5 km above mean sea level.

This atmospheric formation is playing a significant role in influencing the current weather conditions, contributing both to the heatwave and the likelihood of thunderstorms in the region.

Precautionary Measures Advised

Local authorities and emergency services have been alerted. Farmers, outdoor workers, and travellers should remain vigilant and monitor official weather updates.

In case of thunderstorms, people are advised to stay indoors, unplug electrical appliances, and avoid sheltering under trees.

The IMD continues to monitor the evolving situation and will issue further updates as required.

For the latest weather updates and safety guidelines, people are advised to follow alerts from the IMD and local authorities.
