Sukma, May 27: 18 Naxalites surrendered before security forces in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district on Tuesday, including 10 rebels who collectively carried a bounty of Rs 38 lakh on their heads.

According to Sukma Superintendent of Police Kiran Chavan, each surrendered cadre has been provided immediate assistance of Rs 50,000 and will be further rehabilitated under the state government’s policy.

Among the surrendered rebels were prominent figures such as Madkam Aayta (25), a platoon party committee member of the PLGA battalion no. 1, and Bhaskar alias Bhogam Lakhha (26), also from the same battalion—both of whom carried rewards of Rs 8 lakh each.

Two area committee members, Madkam Kamlu (25) and Laxman alias Madvi Chhannu (28), each had a bounty of Rs 5 lakh, while six others were wanted with Rs 2 lakh rewards.

The rebels cited growing disillusionment with the Maoist movement’s “hollow” ideology and the brutality inflicted upon tribal communities as reasons for leaving the insurgency.

They were also reportedly motivated by the Chhattisgarh government’s surrender and rehabilitation policy, as well as the development-oriented ‘Niyad Nellanar’ (Your Good Village) scheme that is gaining traction in remote areas.
