New Delhi, May 28: In a clear demonstration of heightened security preparedness, a large-scale civil defence mock drill will be conducted on Thursday, May 29, across districts in four Indian states bordering Pakistan—Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan and Gujarat.

The exercise, directed by the Directorate of Civil Defence, is designed to assess the country’s response capabilities in the event of cross-border threats or terror-related emergencies.

The upcoming drill follows closely on the heels of Operation Sindoor, reportedly a retaliatory strike carried out by India on May 7–8. That operation was seen as a response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 26 Indian tourists.

Although no formal connection has been made between the military action and the civil defence drill, analysts suggest the timing is deliberate and part of a coordinated strategic posture.

Officials involved in the planning have indicated that the mock drill will test key protocols such as civilian evacuation, disaster response, and coordination among security forces, medical teams, and local authorities.

The aim is to simulate real-time scenarios involving potential hostilities or terror incidents, thereby strengthening inter-agency collaboration.

Sources also indicate that the Centre is considering a broader range of civil preparedness and security enhancements along India’s western border.

The drill is being viewed as an early step in a more comprehensive set of measures under review to improve national resilience and security near the Pakistan frontier.
