Jamshedpur, June 9: In a tragic incident on Sunday, a 22-year-old youth, identified as Vijay Mishra, drowned while bathing in the Kharkai River near Kusum Ghat in the Bagbera police station area. The incident occurred near the Giddi Jhhopdi football ground, casting a shadow of grief over the locality.
According to eyewitnesses and local residents, Vijay, a resident of Road No. 5 in Bagbera Colony, had gone to the river with four to five friends to escape the scorching summer heat.
While bathing, he ventured into deeper waters and began to drown. His friends panicked and fled the scene, unable to help.
Locals who noticed the commotion rushed to rescue him. Despite their efforts, Vijay was pulled from the water lifeless.

The Bagbera police reached the spot after getting the information and took custody of the body. The deceased’s family members, upon seeing the body at the police station, were inconsolable.
The body was sent for post-mortem at MGM Medical College. Police have launched an investigation into the matter.
Residents expressed concern over the recurring incidents at Kusum Ghat, especially during the summer months. They highlighted the lack of warning signs and proper safety arrangements by the administration. Locals claimed that despite repeated accidents, no permanent preventive measures have been put in place.
The Bagbera police station in-charge appealed to the public not to enter rivers or water bodies without proper safety precautions during the summer.
Parents have also been urged to prevent their children from venturing into such locations alone.

Following the incident, local social workers have demanded that the administration install warning boards at sensitive spots like Kusum Ghat and deploy home guards or NDRF personnel during peak summer months to prevent such tragedies in the future.
Vijay Mishra’s untimely death has plunged his family and the entire neighbourhood into deep mourning.
