Dhanbad, Dec 15: A team of IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad faculty members carried out an awareness campaign and taught tribal students of remote areas about the relevance of science and technology in life.

The team under Prof Rashmi Singh of the Department of Management Studies and Industrial Engineering IIT ISM reached 48 km away to the Upgraded Middle School, Kharmo, Nirsa. It made over 200 tribal students aware of science using 3D techniques.

Awareness workshop

“The awareness workshop, which began at around 10 a.m. this morning and concluded in the afternoon, was part of the Department of Science & Technology sponsored project titled, “Motivate School Students& Teachers Concerning the Relevance of Science & Technology Through Innovation Communication

Prof Rashmi Singh said that by using live models of 3-D shapes, the team made the students aware of solid objects with length, breadth and width. Prof Singh is the principal investigator of the project. She added that the team in the workshop dealt with 3D shapes like spheres, rectangles, prisms, cylinders, etc.

Learning 3D shapes

Niladri Das, associate professor of the Department of Management Studies and Industrial Engineering of IIT (ISM), who was also present during the occasion as an invited speaker, said that learning 3D shapes can aid artistic development among children.

“This can help to enhance their creativity and innovative thought process,” she said.

She added that understanding 3D shapes can foster better visualization and increase multiple perceptions, which plays a crucial role in child development,” said Prof Das.

She added that the experience during the workshop was quite good as students of this over 100-year-old school took a keen interest in their lessons.
