New Delhi, Sept 14: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of retired IAS officer Amit Khare as Secretary to the Vice-President of India. A 1985-batch officer of the Jharkhand cadre, Khare will take charge in the rank and pay of Secretary to the Government of India.

According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training on Sunday, his appointment will be on a contract basis for three years from the date of assuming charge, or until further orders, whichever is earlier. The terms of service will be governed by the rules applicable to re-employed central government officers.

National-Level Leadership Roles

Khare has held several key positions in the Union Government. He served as Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, where he oversaw media and communication policies, and later as Education Secretary, contributing to reforms in the education sector. After retiring from the civil service, he joined the Prime Minister’s Office as Adviser, where he was entrusted with social sector portfolios.

Exposed the Fodder Scam

Khare first came into the national spotlight in the 1990s for exposing the multi-crore fodder scam during his tenure in Bihar. His intervention uncovered large-scale financial irregularities in the animal husbandry department, ultimately leading to the conviction of former Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav. His role in the case established his reputation for integrity and fearlessness in public life.

Formal Notification Issued

The government order announcing his appointment has been circulated to senior officials, including the Cabinet Secretary, the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, the Secretary to the President, and other constitutional and administrative authorities.
