Jamshedpur, Sept 27: The southwest monsoon is set to bring a fresh spell of rain as a weather system over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a depression.

Light to moderate rain and thundershowers are likely at many places across the state on September 28, followed by scattered rainfall on September 29, according to the forecast of India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Today, light to moderate rain is expected in scattered places.

Monsoon Withdrawal Line Shifts North

The line of withdrawal of the southwest monsoon currently passes through 20°N/69°E, Veraval, Bharuch, Ujjain, Jhansi, Shahjahanpur and 30°N/81°E. This indicates that while monsoon retreat has begun from parts of western India, it continues to remain active over central and eastern regions.

System Expected to Intensify

A well-marked low-pressure area over the northwest and adjoining central Bay of Bengal persisted. IMD officials said the system is likely to move westwards and concentrate into a depression over the northwest and west-central Bay of Bengal, off the South Odisha–North Andhra Pradesh coasts.

The system is expected to make landfall along the South Odisha–North Andhra Pradesh coastline today. Under its influence, moderate rainfall accompanied by isolated heavy showers may occur in several districts.

Coastal and adjoining interior regions are likely to witness increased cloud cover, gusty winds, and occasional lightning activity.

The approaching system may help improve the seasonal rainfall tally in Jharkhand and its neighbouring states before the monsoon starts withdrawing completely in early October.

Met department officials are also keeping a close watch on the system’s trajectory to issue timely warnings in case of further intensification.

Meanwhile, IMD will continue to monitor the system closely and issue regular updates.
