National workshop on Smart Environmental Solutions begins at IIT ISM Dhanbad

 

Dhanbad, Oct 31: A two-day national workshop on “Smart Solutions for Environmental Applications” commenced on Friday at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, focusing on innovative and technology-enabled approaches to environmental sustainability.

The event is being jointly organized by the Institution of Engineers (India), Dhanbad Local Centre; the Environmental Information, Awareness, Capacity Building and Livelihood Programme (EIACP) Centre; and the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad.

Participation from Leading Institutions

Experts from premier national and international institutions—including IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Kanpur, IIT Patna, SVNIT Surat, BIT Sindri, BCKV Burdwan, HBTU Kanpur, Teesside University (UK), the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), and the Water Resources Department, Government of Jharkhand—are participating in the workshop and delivering keynote addresses.

Raviraj Sharma, Municipal Commissioner of Dhanbad, attended the inaugural session as the chief guest. Prabhunath Yadav, Director and Scientist ‘E’, BIS; and Amartanshu Srivastava, Manager (Environment), Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), were guests of honour. The session was presided over by IIT (ISM) Director Prof. Sukumar Mishra.

Focus on Technology and Sustainability

Addressing the gathering, dignitaries highlighted the increasing role of technology in environmental management and the need for community-driven efforts to achieve sustainable development.

Workshop co-conveners Prof. Sunil Kumar Gupta and Prof. Suresh Pandian, along with Prof. Biswajit Paul, Secretary of IEI Dhanbad Local Centre, emphasized the collaborative role of IEI and IIT (ISM) in promoting sustainable engineering practices and environmental awareness.

Earlier, workshop convener Prof. Alok Sinha, Head of the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, underscored the importance of collective and interdisciplinary approaches in addressing complex environmental challenges.

Student Research and Institutional Support

Twenty students and research scholars from NIAMT Ranchi, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, BIT Sindri, and Anand Engineering College, Agra, are presenting their innovative research work during the workshop.
