THE JHARKHAND STORY NETWORK

Daltonganj, December 13: Nilamber Pitamber University (NPU) is all out to further streamline the conduct of the exams and the results.

It’s exams that get delayed, or results so declared are found to be goofed up. There is the latest issue of the results of the 2022 batch of the MBBS students, where there is alleged to be either a marks overlapping episode or wrong insertion of the marks, and this situation has affected the fate of 30 MBBS students of the 2022 batch out of the 100 regular ones.

The Jharkhand Story Network met the stakeholders in this connection, the officials of the medical college, Nilamber Pitamber University and a few MBBS students. Here are the findings.

How MBBS Marks Are Evaluated

First, the 2022 batch of MBBS students is to give three paper exams, namely pharmacology, pathology and microbiology.

Their marks are to be in this fashion. Theory paper 1 marks+ theory paper 2 marks+ university conducted practical or external marks.

Internal assessment marks are altogether a separate entity for the MBBS students.

There is no inclusion of the internal assessment marks in the final tabulation of marks that leads to the declaration of results.

Marks obtained by an MBBS student in his internal assessment are the sole property of the medical college, which the medical college uses to ascertain the eligibility for its students to appear at the university exam or to put it in a simpler way, to declare an MBBS student sent up for the university exams. Internal assessment marks are just a ladder to sit in the exams and nothing more.

To put it in far more simpler way, the internal assessment of the MBBS students is like a pre-board test, as marks obtained by the MBBS students in the internal assessment have nothing to do with the marks obtained in the university exam.

Again, there is a difference between assessment and exam. Marks are given in both sets but these marks have a typical and different entity.

Where the Error Occurred

Here, in the case of 30 MBBS students, there is a visible mismatch or wrong insertion of marks, like internal assessment marks filling up the space meant for the university marks in the practical or external exam. To be more precise, where the marks obtained by the MBBS students in the practical or external exam should be, there is the insertion of marks obtained in the internal assessment.

This mismatching or wrong insertion of marks of internal assessment in place of the university practical or external exam has sealed the fate of 30 MBBS students. They’re cross-fingered.

The Jharkhand Story Network correspondent was shown such wrong insertions as internal assessment marks in practical for the university practical or external exam marks.

Vice Chancellor Assures Corrective Action

The Vice Chancellor (VC)of the university Dr Prof Dinesh Kumar Singh has taken this issue very seriously.

Talking to the Jharkhand Story Network correspondent the VC said, “I was told of this goof up. I have asked the university controller of examinations Dr Ajit Seth to personally delve deep into this matter”.

“The matter is being scrutinised. If there is any anomaly or goof up, there will be corrective measures for it. Let no MBBS student be in any doubt. Our officials are on the job,” reiterated the VC.

Asked as to how such an error in placing of marks took place, as internal assessment marks have no role at all in deciding the pass or fail status of the MBBS students, to which the VC said, “That’s being looked into. If this is a typo error or error done in ignorance or if it’s any deliberate, truth will come out. I am determined to know the bottom of the case.”

The medical college management is aware that packets of practical or external marks folio submitted to the university is declared missing by the university, and this is almost a regular feature.

The medical college management further said, “We are to give another copy of the marks of the practical or external exams without fail. It’s taxing. Such laxity can be overcome by the exam department of the university.”

VC on the other hand said, “I am going to place in a dedicated team for this work where each and every exam-related matter or material will be well taken care of.”
