Dhanbad, Dec 22: A three-month Green Skill Development Programme (GSDP) certificate course on Waste Optimisation Professional commenced on Monday at the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering (ESE), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad.

The programme is being supported by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Government of India, and will be conducted from December 22, 2025, to March 15, 2026.

More than 30 participants from seven states — Bihar, Goa, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal — have enrolled in the programme.

Dhanbad Municipal Commissioner Ravi Raj Sharma was the chief guest at the inaugural function, while IIT (ISM) Director Prof. Sukumar Mishra presided over the event.

In his inaugural address, Sharma underlined the growing need for skilled professionals in urban waste management and lauded IIT ISM’s efforts to address pressing environmental challenges.

He also shared insights into the Dhanbad Municipal Corporation’s ongoing initiatives aimed at building a cleaner and environmentally sustainable city, and expressed confidence that the programme would significantly contribute to strengthening urban governance and national cleanliness drives.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. Mishra highlighted the crucial role of academic institutions in developing industry-oriented green competencies and acknowledged the support of MoEF&CC in promoting sustainability-driven educational initiatives.

Speaking on the occasion, course convener Prof. Alok Sinha emphasised the importance of skill development in harnessing the country’s demographic potential and reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of positioning India as the skill capital of the world.

Prof. S.K. Gupta, Dean (Students’ Welfare), was also present at the programme. Course co-convener Prof. Vipin Kumar proposed the vote of thanks.

Department officials said the course aims to create green-skilled professionals equipped with practical knowledge of sustainable waste management and resource optimisation.
