Daltonganj, Dec. 23: A 32-year-old woman identified as Mamta Devi of Chutiya village under the Ranka block limits in Garhwa district has been trampled to death by a lone male elephant last night.

Her 3-year-old daughter survived, but her one leg was injured in this attack of the elephant on her mother, which led her to fall off her lap.

Garhwa DFO Dileep Kumar Yadav said, “We are trying to push this elephant off further deep into the jungles.”

Yadav said, “The elephant is a loner, probably disengaged from its herd.”

Ranka Range Officer Gopal Chandra told this correspondent, “We have given Rs 10,000 as ex gratia relief to the bereaved family of Mamta Devi. The rest of Rs 3,90,000 would be given after the post-mortem report, death certificate, etc.”

“This loner elephant has been roaming around in Ranka over the last three months. It has left a trail of destruction. Now, it has taken one life.”

Mamta Devi had her house right in the jungle of Chutiya. Around midnight, this elephant came. Mamta Devi ran out of her home with her 3-year-old daughter. In panic and chaos, she fell to the ground, and her daughter fell apart from her mother.

The elephant killed the mother. Her injured daughter with a leg injury is undergoing treatment in the Sadar Hospital Garhwa.
