PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, April 1: East Singhbhum on Wednesday rolled out the first phase of Census 2027, marking the start of a more tech-enabled and participatory enumeration process.

Online self-enumeration option introduced

For the first time, residents can complete their census details online through a self-enumeration portal, reducing dependence on physical surveys.

Nearly 4,000 enumerators, including teachers, anganwadi workers, sahiyas, and government staff, have been deployed across the district and trained to carry out the exercise efficiently.

House listing phase begins across district

The current phase focuses on house listing, where enumerators will collect data on housing conditions, household size, and access to basic services.

The survey includes 33 key questions covering drinking water, electricity, sanitation, internet connectivity, and economic status, aimed at assessing living standards and infrastructure gaps.

The Centre’s multilingual portal (16 languages) allows citizens to directly submit their information, strengthening digital governance and transparency.

Second phase to capture individual data

Officials said the next phase will collect individual-level details such as age, education, and socio-economic indicators.

The nationwide census, originally scheduled for 2021 but delayed due to Covid-19, has now resumed with greater digital integration to improve accuracy and efficiency.

As per the Census 2011, East Singhbhum had a population of around 13.5 lakh, with a literacy rate of 84% and a sex ratio of 949. About 55% of residents live in urban areas, while 45% are in rural regions.

The district administration has urged residents to cooperate and provide accurate information to support better policy planning and development.
