Heatwave retreats as thundershowers bring relief across Jharkhand

Jamshedpur, May 29: After weeks of intense heat and high humidity, residents across Jharkhand are finally getting relief as changing weather conditions signal the retreat of the heatwave and the onset of pre-monsoon activity.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds across several parts of the state over the next few days.

According to the latest weather bulletin, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph are likely at isolated places across Jharkhand on May 30, except in the north-western region.

On May 31, similar weather conditions are expected over north-western parts of the state, with wind speeds ranging between 40–50 kmph.

From June 1 to June 3, thunderstorms and gusty winds are likely to continue across most parts of Jharkhand, excluding some north-western areas.

Meteorologists attributed the change in weather to a trough extending from northwest Uttar Pradesh to north Coastal Andhra Pradesh. The system has also triggered widespread rainfall in neighbouring Bihar since last night.

The trough passes through cyclonic circulations over northwest Uttar Pradesh and north Jharkhand, extending up to 1.5 km above mean sea level. Another north-south trough stretching from north Jharkhand to north Coastal Andhra Pradesh across Odisha is also influencing the prevailing weather pattern.

The drop in temperature and overcast skies have brought much-needed relief to people struggling with prolonged heatwave conditions over the past several days.

“It finally feels possible to step outside during the afternoon again. The last few days were unbearable,” said Ranchi resident Amit Kumar.

“We were struggling with sleepless nights because of the heat. The rain clouds and cool winds have brought huge relief,” said Sunita Devi, a resident of Sonari in Jamshedpur.

Weather officials have, however, advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorm activity, particularly in open and vulnerable areas, due to the risk of lightning strikes and strong winds.
