Dhanbad, Dec 31:  Two senior professors of Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital (SNMMCH) Dhanbad, Dr AK Thakur, HoD, ENT and Dr BC Banerjee, HoD, Pathology department, retired today after rendering service to the institution for more than 35 years.

Bidding farewell to both the senior professors, SNMMCH principal Dr Jyotiranjan Prasad highly praised their contribution to the institution’s development and expressed hope that concerned departments would get their guidance in future, too.

Superintendent Dr Anil Kumar, Prof ( Dr), UK Ojha, Prof ( Dr) Kameshwar Biswas, Prof ( Dr) Ashutosh Kumar ( ENT) and senior members of different faculty recalled the contribution of both the professors in the institution during 27 years.

As a senior resident, Dr AK Thakur joined the then Patliputra Medical College Hospital (now SNMMCH) in 1996. In 2004, he became assistant professor; in 2009, he became associate professor. In 2013, he became a professor, and two years later, he became head of the ENT department.

Dr Thakur completed MBBS from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College Hospital (MGMMCH) Jamshedpur in 1981 and MD from Rajendra Medical College Hospital ( now RIMS) Ranchi in 1987. His first appointment was in the Ekma block of Saran district from 1988 to 1996.

Dr AK Thakur became president of the Association of Otolaryngologists Bihar- Jharkhand chapter in 2022 and conducted two state conferences in the span of three years.

Dr BC Banerjee also joined PMCH Dhanbad in 1996 as a tutor. In 1999, he became assistant professor and associate professor in 2004. After the transfer of Dr Md RA Ansari to RIMS Ranchi in 2011, Dr Banerjee became HoD, and in 2013, he was elevated to a professor.

Dr Banerjee completed his MBBS from RMCH Ranchi in 1984 and PG in 1988. He joined the Pratappur block of Chatra district in 1990 as a medical officer. In the Covid period 2020-21, his performance in the pathology department was highly appreciated by the then deputy commissioner Umashankar Singh as well as the state health department.
