New Delhi, Jan 1: Following a string of powerful earthquakes on Japan’s western shore on Monday, tsunami waves hit the country’s coastal districts. Following the occurrence of 21 earthquakes in the nation with a magnitude greater than 4.0, people have been told to evacuate.
Japan experienced a sequence of powerful earthquakes on Monday, leading to tsunami waves reaching up to five feet. Authorities responded by issuing tsunami warnings and evacuation advisories for residents along the northwestern coast, according to local media reports.
The seismic activity commenced with a 5.7 magnitude earthquake at 4:06 pm (local time), succeeded by a 7.6 magnitude quake at 4:10 pm (local time), a 6.1 magnitude quake at 4:18 pm (local time), a 4.5 magnitude event at 4:23 pm (local time), a 4.6 magnitude quake at 4:29 pm (local time), and a 4.8 magnitude quake at 4:32 pm (local time).
The earthquake struck Ishikawa and neighbouring prefectures, with one of them having a preliminary magnitude of 7.6, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), as reported by The Associated Press.

People asked to evacuate coastal areas
Following the tsunami warning, individuals were advised to promptly evacuate coastal areas and seek higher ground or the tops of buildings as waves reaching up to 5 meters impacted the Noto coast in Ishikawa, as reported by Japanese public broadcaster NHK. The local meteorological office indicated the occurrence of 21 earthquakes with a magnitude of 4.0, according to AFP news agency.
According to Reuters, the JMA issued tsunami warnings for the western coastal districts of the prefectures of Ishikawa, Niigata, and Toyama. There were reports of waves as high as three meters in other prefectures, like as Niigata and Toyama, according to NHK.
The governments of North Korea, South Korea, and the far eastern Russian cities of Vladivostok and Nakhodka have all issued tsunami alerts.
