The main accused Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was arrested the day after the incident. The case was handed over to the CBI for investigation.

The in-camera trial started on November 12, during which 50 witnesses were examined. The hearing in the case concluded on January 9.

On Monday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee voiced her dissatisfaction with the court’s decision to sentence Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment. She stated that if the case had been handled by the Kolkata Police, they would have ensured a death penalty.
