New Delhi, Jan 30: Imran Khan, the former prime minister of Pakistan, was found guilty of leaking state secrets and received a 10-year prison sentence.

A special court in Pakistan on Tuesday sentenced Imran Khan, the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and Shah Mahmood Qureshi, the vice chairman of PTI, to ten years in prison in connection with the cipher case.

Judge Abul Hasnat Zulqarnain of the special court in Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, which was established under the Official Secrets Act, announced the decision to sentence the two leaders during the case hearing.

A diplomatic cable that purportedly vanished from Khan’s custody is at contention in the cipher case. Before and during the no-confidence motion against him last year, Khan had stated on numerous occasions that the cipher indicated a plot to unseat him as prime minister.

In jail since Aug 5, 2023

In April 2022, Khan was removed from the position of Prime Minister of Pakistan following a vote of no-confidence. Subsequently, on August 5, 2023, he was incarcerated as an Islamabad court handed him a three-year prison sentence in the Toshakhana case. His imprisonment took place at the Attock District Jail to fulfill his prescribed prison term.

Following the suspension of his sentence by the Islamabad High Court, Khan faced subsequent arrest in the cipher case. He stayed in Attock jail under judicial remand during this period.
