Dhanbad, Jan 2: Jharkhand Governor Santosh Gangwar is set to attend the 34th Martyr’s Day ceremony of late Superintendent of Police (SP) Randhir Verma tomorrow at Randhir Verma Chowk in Dhanbad.

Kishor Kumar, secretary of the Randhir Verma Memorial Trust, shared this information with the media, adding that Rajya Sabha MP Deepak Prakash will serve as the event’s chief guest.

Prominent Political Figures to Participate

Dhanbad MP Dhulu Mahto will preside over the ceremony, which several key political leaders are expected to attend. Dhanbad Sadar MLA Raj Sinha, Jharia MLA Ragni Singh, and Baghmara MLA Shatrughan Mahto will also be present.

According to sources, Governor Santosh Gangwar has confirmed his participation, even adjusting his schedule to accommodate another engagement with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. This reflects his commitment to honouring the memory of SP Randhir Verma.

Remembering Legacy of SP Randhir Verma

Rita Verma, wife of the late Randhir Verma and a four-time Dhanbad MP, will also attend the event.

On January 3, 1991, SP Randhir Verma displayed unparalleled bravery during an armed encounter with four Punjab-based terrorists. The terrorists, armed with AK-47 rifles, were robbing the Bank of Baroda near Court More. Upon receiving the information, Verma, using his bodyguard’s service revolver, rushed to the scene.

In the intense exchange of gunfire, SP Verma killed all four attackers despite sustaining multiple gunshot wounds. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries. A bank customer, Shymal Chakraborty, also lost his life in the crossfire.

A Tribute to Heroism

SP Randhir Verma’s heroic actions and ultimate sacrifice continue to inspire generations. The annual Martyr’s day ceremony commemorates his courage and selflessness in the fight against terrorism.

The event serves as a reminder of the extraordinary valour of a police officer who laid down his life to protect others.
