Jamshedpur, Dec 17: Balwant Singh, a 1984 Sikh riot victim, has been granted compensation of ₹12 lakh following recommendations made by a one-member commission constituted by the Jharkhand High Court. The compensation was transferred to Balwant Singh’s account today by the Hazaribagh Deputy Commissioner.

The case came to light after the All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF) filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Jharkhand High Court, seeking justice for families affected by the 1984 Sikh riots. Satnam Singh Gambhir, East India President of the Federation, stated that the PIL prompted the High Court to form a one-member commission to investigate the claims of riot victims.

Balwant Singh, originally a resident of Hazaribagh, had moved to Jammu with his family following the riots. He presented his case to the commission with strong documentary evidence, detailing the losses suffered during the violence. After a thorough investigation and assessment, the commission recommended that the Hazaribagh Deputy Commissioner provide ₹12 lakh as compensation.

The Jharkhand government approved the recommendation, enabling the transfer of the compensation amount. Satnam Singh Gambhir personally thanked the Hazaribagh Deputy Commissioner for his swift action in ensuring justice for the riot victim.

Expressing his commitment, Satnam Singh Gambhir stated, “We will continue to fight for justice until every affected family receives the compensation and support they deserve.”
