Jamshedpur, Oct 8: A 65-year-old man, Abdul Salim, was hacked to death in his sleep by his estranged son-in-law at Islamnagar under Kapali thana Out Post in the adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan district near Jamshedpur on the intervening night of Tuesday.

The barbaric incident took place as just two days later the murder victim’s divorcee daughter Saika was to get married.

Assailant gave Talaak to victim’s daughter two months ago

The assailant identified as Fayaz Ansari who is the former husband of Saika has fled having killed Abdul Salim in the wee hours.

Saika was married to Fayaz a couple of months ago in the Lohardaga district, but the marriage failed, causing Fayaz to pronounce the customary ‘talaak.’

After Saika returned back home from Lohardaga, her father arranged her marriage with someone else. The marriage was to be solemnised on October 9.

Victim murdered while asleep

As the ambience of Abdul Salim’s house was bustling with pleasant activities, the victim’s son-in-law dropped in there on Monday evening, purportedly getting a hint of Saika’s remarriage.

In the night, Fayaz went to bed at Abdul Salim’s house without creating any chaos over the remarriage of his former wife. As Abdul Salim would usually sleep outside in the veranda, he too went to sleep. But past midnight, Fayaz woke up from his sleep and came out.

Somewhere in the veranda was lying a ‘gaita’ (an iron tool used to dig soil) which he picked up and struck repeatedly at the elderly man while the victim was asleep.

Police hunting the assailant

OC, Kapali TOP, Sonu Kumar said the assailant fled the scene after committing the murder.

“We have started raiding at every possible place including at Lohardaga in search of the assailant Fayaz Ansari after shifting the body to the Seraikela Sadar Hospital for postmortem,” said Kumar while talking to The Jharkhand Story.
