Jamshedpur, Aug 6: An elderly man was killed on being hit by a speeding autorickshaw on Kalimati road near “Howrah Bridge” under the Golmuri thana area late on Monday night.

The victim was identified as Chandan Singh (52), a resident of Sakchi Gurudwara Bustee.

The fatal mishap took place as Singh who was a private security guard was crossing the one-way road while returning home from his duty.

Fatal head injury

The autorickshaw in question was coming at a maddening speed from the Sakchi end towards Golmuri apparently without paying heed to whether anyone is crossing the road or not. As the elderly pedestrian fell victim to the unruly vehicle, he fell in a pool of blood, sustaining a fatal head injury.

As the mishap took place, a section of the local residents came to the rescue of the victim whereas another section chased the autorickshaw which was finally intercepted near the RD Tata roundabout.

By that time, a patrolling party had reached the spot where the people handed over the erring autorickshaw driver to the police.

On the other hand, the mishap victim who had been rushed to MGM Medical College Hospital was declared as brought dead by the doctors on emergency duty at the hospital.

Driver arrested, to be sent into judicial custody

Golmuri thana OC confirmed about an autorickshaw that caused the death of a pedestrian late night.

“We have arrested the driver and seized the vehicle. The accused will be sent to the judicial custody tomorrow after we get it checked up whether he was driving under the influence of liquor, ” said the OC while talking to The Jharkhand Story.

Traffic police seem to have lost control over the unruly autorickshaws which pose constant danger to the commuters as well as the passengers who board these vehicles. The only thing that the traffic cops seem to have mastered is helmet-checking in the city.
