PINAKI MAJUMDAR
Jamshedpur, June 25: In a major crackdown, police busted a mini illegal liquor manufacturing unit operating inside the residence of a retired Income Tax officer in Sonari’s North Layout late on Tuesday night.
Acting on a tip-off during a routine patrol, police raided the premises and recovered large quantities of fake branded liquor, packaging materials, labelling machines, spirit, and over 500 empty bottles.
Two workers running the illicit operation were arrested on the spot. Preliminary investigation suggests the residence was either rented or handed over for use, though the officer’s direct involvement is under investigation.

The breakthrough came after a youth, caught by locals on suspicion of theft, revealed the existence of the factory during police interrogation.
Police suspect the fake liquor was being supplied across various city areas and possibly beyond.
Further raids and arrests are expected. Senior police officials termed the matter “serious” and confirmed that every angle is being probed.
The excise department may also join the investigation soon.
