Jamshedpur, April 5: Inspector Sanjay Kumar has been posted as the new officer-in-charge (OC) of Jugsalai thana after the erstwhile incumbent officer Sachin Kumar Das was suspended for assaulting an Army jawan on March 14.

Sachin Kumar Das’ suspension followed an order of DGP Anurag Gupta after Zonal IG Akhilesh Jha had carried out an enquiry into the matter.

After getting the enquiry report from the Zonal IG on Friday, the DGP had instructed the SSP Kishore Kaushal to suspend the Jugsalai thana OC, Sachin Kumar Das, and seven constables who were also involved in the assault meted out to the Army jawan.

According to the police, a dispute had cropped at Jugsalai on the day of Holi between the Kapali thana OC, Sonu Kumar and a group of youths over the smearing of ‘Avery.’

As soon as the trouble started a police party had arrived at the scene and had rounded up the youths. As the Army jawan Suraj Ray and his cousin Vijay Ray were on the spot they had also been caught and taken to the police station.

At the police station, Suraj Ray was mercilessly beaten allegedly at the instruction of the OC Sachin Kumar Das despite Ray repeatedly telling the police that he is an Army jawan.  After the assault, Suraj Ray and his cousin were forwarded to jail after they were produced before a judicial magistrate the next morning.

After going through the ordeal, the Army jawan had lodged a complaint with the police authority subsequent to which the DGP got the complaint inquired.
