Daltonganj, Dec 6: Top Maoist Birju Singh alias Chhotu Kharwar’s murder mystery at the hands of fellow Maoists has been solved by the Latehar district police.

Supremacy and distrust by Kharwar’s fellow cadres were said to have been the reason behind the murder.

Four Maoists arrested

The Latehar police have caught and remanded four Maoists in this case. The four included the prime killer, Pooran Parhaiyya. Among the four caught and jailed is one Looruk Miyan aged 50.

Latehar SP Kumar Gaurav said, “Distribution of bounty in the form of levy cost the life of Chhotu Kharwar. His cadres disbelieved him for bounty.”

“Again, there was a long-standing fight for supremacy and dominance. The struggle for supremacy was between Mirtunjay Bhuiyan and Chhotu Kharwar. It was hopelessly settled by flattening Chhotu Kharwar,” added Kumar Gaurav.

Police collect Kharwar’s personal belongings

The Latehar SP said, “Police have collected the personal belongings of the deceased Chhotu Kharwar like shoes, blood-soaked shawl and sleeping bag, blood-soaked soil where the body was abandoned.”

Recovery of five empty cartridges of AK-47, live ammunition 47 rounds etc suggested the Maoists had no shortage of weapons and ammunition nor had they any crisis in treachery to Chhotu Kharwar who carried a reward of Rs 15 lakh on his head but died a miserable death and his killer cadres would not be any richer by even a penny for bumping off Chhotu Kharwar.

It took police a little over a week to bust this case where the Barwadeeh police led by SDPO Bharat Ram and the IRB team did a good job.

The Jharkhand Story correspondent spoke to Barwadeeh SDPO Bharat Ram to find out if the Maoists who killed their regional commander by deception had any remorse for what they did, to which the SDPO said very plainly, “None of the four had any grain of remorse or repentance. They had no such emotion at all. They looked the least concerned about what they did to Chhotu Kharwar and continued to be indifferent to what is in store for them now.”

Details of murder and disposal of body

Birju Singh alias Chhotu Kharwar who was a regional commander was shot dead by his cadres led by Pooran Parhaiyya on the night of November 25 under the Chhipadohar police station limits.

The first thing that the Maoists – the killers did was no mourning for the killed Chhotu Kharwar whose name used to spell terror. They dug up a small patch of land and abandoned their regional commander on November 26.

A day later on November 27, Chhotu Kharwar’s killers had second thoughts perhaps they didn’t want Chhotu Kharwar to go out of this world unknown. So, the Maoists took out his body from the ditch where they had abandoned or buried him and then threw it on the road of Chapar Amwatikar. There was a purpose behind it. The assailant Maoists wanted his body to be seen and identified by the villagers and the police.

Chhotu Kharwar didn’t die anonymously. The villagers saw and vouched for him to be Chhotu Kharwar. The police too knew well who the dead ultra was, but the police were in no hurry to pick up this body to be sent to the post-mortem house at the Latehar Sadar Hospital.

Once reassured that there was no booby trap implanted in the body of Chhotu Kharwar, police sent the body of Chhotu Kharwar for autopsy. The delay on the part of the police can’t be construed as any lackadaisical attitude rather it was necessitated to be done following a past incident of an IED lodged in the belly of a cop by the Maoists in the same Latehar district.
