Jamshedpur, June 10:  In a powerful demonstration of environmental stewardship and community engagement, Tata Steel spearheaded a river cleaning drive at Domuhani Ghat—the picturesque confluence of the Subarnarekha and Kharkai rivers.

The initiative was organized in collaboration with the Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board (Regional Office), Swachhatapukare Foundation, and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

Themed around this year’s global call to action, “Beat Plastic Pollution,” the event brought together over 50 enthusiastic volunteers from partner organizations who gathered at dawn to contribute to a cleaner, healthier river ecosystem.

The drive focused on removing plastic waste and debris from the riverbanks, aiming to both reduce pollution and raise awareness about the importance of preserving natural water bodies.

Participants, equipped with eco-friendly safety gear including gloves and masks, were also encouraged to bring their own reusable water bottles—underscoring the drive’s commitment to minimizing further waste during the clean-up operation.

Volunteers were briefed on safety protocols and waste segregation before beginning the one-hour cleanup.

Speaking about the initiative, a Tata Steel spokesperson emphasized the importance of such grassroots movements in combating plastic pollution.

“At Tata Steel, we believe in taking proactive steps toward sustainable development. The River Cleaning Drive is part of our ongoing efforts to foster environmental responsibility, and to inspire collective action toward protecting our water bodies and natural ecosystems, ” said the spokesman.

Representatives from the Adityapur – based pollution control board and CII echoed this sentiment, highlighting the need for collaborative public-private partnerships to tackle the growing threat of plastic pollution.

Beyond the physical cleanup, the event also served as an educational platform. Volunteers and local residents were engaged in conversations about the ecological threats posed by single-use plastics and the long-term benefits of community-driven conservation efforts.

Swachhatapukare Foundation, known for its grassroots environmental work, played a pivotal role in mobilizing local awareness and supporting logistical arrangements.

The Foundation’s team shared insights on sustainable waste management practices and the role of citizens in maintaining the health of local rivers.

The Domuhani Ghat, a significant cultural and environmental landmark in Jamshedpur, was chosen deliberately for the drive due to its ecological importance and its growing concern over plastic accumulation.

The clean-up effort is expected to inspire similar initiatives in the region, fostering a wider culture of sustainability and ecological mindfulness.

As World Environment Day this year continues to resonate across the globe, the river cleaning drive at Domuhani Ghat stands as a testament to the power of collective action and the critical role that responsible corporate citizenship can play in safeguarding the environment for future generations.
