Acting VC says we are on the job

NPU Acting VC Dr Tapan Kumar Shandilya told the Jharkhand Story correspondent, “We are determined to clear exams dragging on. Ides of March is the first to get over. It is March 15, to be precise. We are to catch up with the session. It’s running late.”

Controller of the university exams of NPU, Dr M K Deepak, said, “We have so far held 22 exams. Now, it’s time for the evaluation and publication of results. We are on it very seriously.”

Two pvt agencies for exams

There are two agencies handling exam work here at NPU. These are NCCF and UST.

The NCCF comes in the firing line of the students more than UST, who accuse this agency of gross negligence and apathy towards issuing the admit cards, subject mapping, flawed results, etc.

NCCF fudges PG paper exams

The NCCF recently fudged the generic and post-graduate paper exams, much to the students’ discontent. The university was forced to postpone the exams for the mismatched subjects.

Shandilya said, “I have asked the two agencies to mend their ways and act responsibly. These agencies can’t have any liberty to play with the student’s career.”

Acting VC warns exam agencies

“These agencies have been admonished not to be any negligent or errant as otherwise the university will be forced to terminate the agreement,” reminded the VC.

Deepak, the Controller of Exams, said, “The agencies put the university to many embarrassments for various omissions and commissions. It did one such with the admit cards of the PG exams. I, too, have asked the agencies to be careful.”

Holding PG exams is a challenge. There are very valid reasons. First, the exams of the PG courses are to be two years in duration. Otherwise, students will need help with national-level exams if the duration of two years falls short.

Two-year mandated duration

Here, UG results come pretty late. As a result, it cuts into the years meant for the PG. Late results of the UG erode the two-year mandated duration.

Again, a student takes admission when the Chancellor’s portal opens. Here, the date of admission sets the duration of the course, and there is no liberty to overdo the two-year schedule for the PG courses.

Acting VC Dr Shandilya said, “I am told of the stumbling blocks in holding faster PG exams. I am trying to find out how to bail out the students.”

The Controller of Exams said, “The bondage of a six-month semester comes in the way. PG has four semesters in all. By this account, it is of 24 months @6 months per semester. No university can afford to jump any semester.”

Exam controller suggests a shortened semester

Deepak, however, suggested, “At best, the university can shorten the semester by a month or two per semester. But course coverage has to be sped up.”

There is widespread allegation among the students that questions are set out of the syllabus. It happened recently with the UG physics paper exam, where 600 examinees boycotted this physics paper exam, citing questions out of the syllabus.

Acting VC Dr Shandilya said, “I tell my students this malaise will be resolved. Students should concentrate on the syllabus. Questions will be by the courses covered only.”

Eyebrows over WhatsApp questions

Serious eyebrows were raised regarding modalities to two papers in which questions were WhatsApped, and apprehensions were that the question paper of PG History was in the public domain before the exam.

However, the acting VC said, “The matter is overblown; nevertheless, strict instructions have been issued to maintain the sanctity of the exams here”.

Controller of exams, Deepak, said the uproar over the History paper was a misplaced one while questions were WhatsApped to override the time.

NPU needs two lakhs of answer books

The NPU is in dire need of sessional internal assessment answer books. It needs two lakhs of answer books for the sessional internal assessment exam in one academic session.

Acting VC NPU Dr Shandilya said, “The university will obtain permission from the Raj Bhawan to float a tender for sessional internal assessment answer books. We will procure it through the Ministry of Commerce’s GeM portal.”

The Exam Controller said, “There is no problem with the 32-page answer books. It is outsourced here. The problem of sessional internal assessment answer books will be sorted out by GeM. This answer book is required for even practical assessment from science subjects to practical oriented subjects of Arts like psychology etc.”
