Daltonganj, April 30: People are familiar with prayer bells, class bells, and tiffin bells in schools. But a school in Jharkhand has introduced a unique concept—a “water bell”—to promote hydration among students during extreme summer conditions.

VP Memorial Gyan Niketan School in Daltonganj has started this initiative for its 1,800 students, allowing them to drink water during class hours without hesitation. Drinking water in the classroom is no longer treated as indiscipline but as part of a health-focused approach.
Water Bell to Tackle Rising Heat
The move comes as Palamu experiences intense heat, with temperatures rising close to 45 degrees Celsius. Schoolchildren are especially vulnerable to the heat, particularly around midday when they return home under harsh sunlight.

School principal Anjani Kumar said the decision was taken to protect students from heat-related problems. He explained that the “water bell” rings twice during school hours every day, encouraging students to drink water regularly. He also advised students to drink water before leaving for home.
Simple Idea, Strong Health Focus
According to sources, the idea was developed by the principal, who believes that preventing dehydration is key to staying healthy during summer. Regular intake of water can help reduce the risk of heat fatigue and exhaustion.
Students have responded positively to the initiative. One student said that just like cricketers take drinks breaks during matches, they now have their own time to drink water in school.
The initiative highlights a simple yet effective step taken by the school to ensure student health and safety during the ongoing heatwave.
