Bengaluru, June 5: Following the June 4 stampede that killed 11 people and injured over 50 during the IPL victory celebration of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the Karnataka High Court has directed the state government to file a comprehensive status report by June 10.

The division bench, led by Acting Chief Justice V Kameshwar Rao and Justice C M Joshi, directed the court registry to register the matter as a suo motu public interest litigation. The matter will be heard again on June 10.

Issuing notice to the government, the court underlined the seriousness of the incident, which occurred outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium amid an overwhelming turnout for the RCB celebration.

The incident occurred during a massive gathering of nearly three lakh people for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL victory celebration.
In a hearing held on Thursday, the court issued notice to the state government, seeking a detailed status report on the incident. “News reports indicate the scale of the tragedy. We are treating it as a suo motu writ petition,” the bench noted.

The High Court sought clarity on decisions surrounding the felicitation event and crowd management.
The court also raised concerns over ambulance deployment and general preparedness. In response, the state’s Advocate General said there was substantial police presence but acknowledged that the crowd far exceeded expectations.

He added that senior officials from the police and administration, along with 1,483 personnel, were reportedly on duty. The Advocate General said the Chief Minister had promptly announced compensation and free medical aid, adding that the government was open to further suggestions.
